Hi, I’m Steve Shaw.
MY MISSION IS TO EMPOWER STUDENTS.
I have over 15 years of experience as a classroom teacher at the high school and college levels. I have been a tutor for over 35 years (high school through college) and have been working with students for over 10 years as an ACT coach. I have helped hundreds of students to improve their grades and ACT scores. Dozens of my ACT students have reached scores of 30 or higher.
I would be honored for the opportunity to help you, too.
My Approach
I also have over 20 years of experience in the counseling field, and I approach tutoring from the same person-centered orientation that I use with counseling. I start by keeping a space where it is ok to take chances answering questions, and to make mistakes and not be ashamed of it. I model respect for wherever they are, and I keep the sessions fun and low stress.
Learning is magical for young children, and it can still be very fun for older students when we remove negative consequences from it.
EXperience success
Many students arrive with a sense of defeat, saying that they “can’t do it.” Or they say they were great at a subject when they were younger, and then things got harder and they missed something crucial. Now many feel hopelessly left behind. COVID, and then Hurricane Ida, only made things worse.
I help students gain the missing pieces and then see that they CAN do whatever they need to.

My goal is to help students see themselves as people who can do great things when they believe in themselves and put in the work. Great things require practice, and it is hard for many students to keep struggling when they don’t believe it will make a difference.
In sessions, students begin to get questions right, regain their confidence, and see great results from their consistent work.
